What it does
When a local authority asks you to describe your child's education in writing, you have all the material — hours, subjects, marked work, photos — but turning it into prose is a job in itself.
This drafts that prose for you, from the same record the Reports screen assembles. It is off unless you turn it on, and it produces a draft you edit and own: nothing is saved, filed or sent anywhere by AltEd.
Where to find it
- Turn it on: Settings → Profile tab → AI-drafted summaries
- Use it: Learning → Reports, above the education record
If you don't see the option on Reports, either it isn't switched on for your account or this AltEd instance has no model configured.
Step by step
- Go to Settings, open the Profile tab, and read the AI-drafted summaries card.
- Turn the switch on.
- Go to Reports, choose the learner and period.
- Select Draft a summary.
- Read it, edit it in the box, and Copy it wherever you need it.
Try again re-drafts from the same records — useful if the wording didn't suit you.
What it will and won't do
It only describes what you've logged. Select What it was written from under any draft to see the exact list of facts it was given — days, hours, subjects, marks, evidence titles, providers. If something isn't in that list, it isn't in the draft.
It won't pad a thin term. If little was recorded, you get a short summary saying so. That's deliberate: the readiness check exists to tell you when a period is thin, and a summary that glossed over it would defeat the point. If the draft is shorter than you hoped, the answer is more records, not more prose.
It won't judge. It describes what happened. It won't say whether the education is "suitable" — that isn't its call, or ours.
It won't file anything. No draft is stored, sent to your local authority, or shared with your providers.
Before you turn it on
Drafting sends a summary of what you've recorded — subjects, hours, the titles of your evidence — to a third-party language model. Nothing is sent until you press the button, and nothing is sent in the background.
Turning the switch off stops it immediately, and nothing else in AltEd depends on it.
Tips and good to know
- Always read it. It was written by a language model from your records. It is not a statement from AltEd, and you're the one putting your name to it.
- Draft near the end of a period, once the records are in. A draft is only as good as what it was written from.
- The What it was written from list is a quick way to spot a gap — if a subject you taught isn't there, the work probably wasn't linked to a lesson.
- Edit freely. The wording is a starting point, and you know your child.
Troubleshooting
