What it does
Two records that together answer "is this child receiving a suitable education?":
- Attendance and hours — one entry per learner per day: what kind of learning it was, how many hours, and a short note on what was covered. This is the backbone of a local-authority review in England, and of the day/hour minimums many US states set.
- Marks and progress — the scores providers award on assignments, rolled up into an average per subject so you can see attainment rather than just activity.
Recording as you go takes a minute a day. Reconstructing a year from memory the week before a review does not.
Where to find it
- Navigation: Learning → Progress
- URL:
/dashboard/progress
Marks are awarded on the Assignments screen by the provider who set the work; they appear here and against the assignment itself.
Step by step
Record a day
- Go to Progress (
/dashboard/progress). - Choose the learner from the Student picker.
- Select Record a day.
- Complete the form:
- Date — defaults to today.
- Kind — Home education, Tutoring, Group activity, Educational visit, or Absence.
- Hours — in quarter-hour steps, up to 24. Absences record 0.
- What was covered — a sentence is plenty: "Fractions practice, read two chapters of Carrie's War, nature walk." This narrative is the part a reviewer actually reads.
- Save.
Recording the same date twice updates that day rather than adding a duplicate — so correcting yesterday's entry is just a matter of logging it again.
Read the summary
The cards at the top of the screen cover the period you've selected:
- Learning days — days recorded as anything other than an absence.
- Hours recorded — the total across the period.
- Average mark — the mean across marked work only. It shows "—" when nothing has been marked yet; unmarked tasks never count as zero.
- Work outstanding — assignments not yet completed.
Change the period with the filter beside the student picker.
Mark a piece of work (providers and admins)
- Go to Assignments (
/dashboard/assignments). - Open the … menu on the piece of work and choose Mark work.
- Enter the Score and what it was Out of, add Feedback, and optionally tick to mark it reviewed at the same time.
- Save. The mark and your feedback appear for the family immediately.
To remove a mark, open Mark work again and choose Clear mark.
What each screen shows
Progress shows a student picker and period filter, four summary cards, a By subject breakdown (marked work only, averaged per subject), and Recorded days — the day-by-day log with its kind, hours, notes and who recorded it, with a … menu to remove a day.
Assignments gains a Mark column showing the score, the total and the percentage (e.g. "8/10 · 80%"), or "—" for unmarked work. Guardians see marks and feedback but cannot change them.
Tips and good to know
- Log little and often. A note a day beats a reconstruction a year.
- Everything counts as education. Museum trips, group days, cooking, a long conversation about the Romans — record them with the kind that fits. A record showing only formal desk work under-represents what actually happened.
- Only providers and admins award marks, and only for work they set — guardians record progress and hours, which keeps attainment evidence independent.
- The average deliberately ignores unmarked tasks. A completed-but-unmarked task is finished work, not a zero.
- Providers see attendance only for learners they work with; a family's full record stays with the family.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | What to try | | --- | --- | | "Use quarter-hour steps" | Hours go in 0.25 increments — 1.5, 2.75 and so on. | | I recorded the wrong day | Record the correct date again with the right details; the day updates in place. To remove it entirely, use Remove day in the … menu. | | Average mark shows "—" | Nothing has been marked yet. Ask the provider who set the work to mark it, or check the Mark column on Assignments. | | There's no Mark work action | You're signed in as a guardian, or you didn't set that piece of work. Only the assigner (or an admin) can mark it. | | The student picker is empty | Add a learner first on Students (/dashboard/students). |
